MPlayer is far from being perfect :/

While coding the MPlayer Phonon backend, I encounter several MPlayer limits:
- Wrong VBR MP3 length detection
- The DirectX video output driver is not compatible with Aero (Windows Vista) There is a new Direct3D video output driver that works fine from what I have tested, see source code
- Slave mode is somewhat very poor compare to a full API (like libvlc, GStreamer...)
- No CDDA (Audio CD) under Windows
- No release since more than a year, you have to recompile MPlayer yourself to bypass the obsolete 1.0rc2
- A lot of minor bugs and limitations that make my code complex...

I will report all the bugs I encounter. I guess I will do it when phonon-mplayer will be on KDE repository. This way I will probably get more chances to be listen by the MPlayer devs. (Yes, marketing is important even inside the OpenSource world)

I have to try out the GStreamer Phonon backend under Windows.
The guys from SongBird already use GStreamer on all the major platforms (MacOSX, Linux, Windows) cf

Netbook: Dell Inspiron Mini 12"

Two tests of the new netbook Dell Inspiron Mini 12":
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/dell-inspiron-mini-12.aspx?page=1
http://apcmag.com/scoop_we_review_the_inspiron_mini_12__dells_supersized_yet_superslim_12_inch_netbook.htm

Cons:
- Not expendable 1GB RAM
- Not very standard hard drive (1.8")
- Processor not fast enough for Vista
- Too expensive ($654)
Pros:
- New Poulsbo chipset
- Not too small not to big
- Good battery life (5h with the 6 cells)
- Good screen resolution: 1280 x 800
- NO FAN !!!!

Conclusion: the Dell Inspiron Mini 12" as too many flaws but still I predict a great future for this kind of netbook:
9" is too small, 12" is perfect. Intelligent phones like GooglePhone or the IPhone are going to involve and reduce the interest in 7/9" netbooks.
Poulsbo is the first real chipset for the Atom processor and will improve a lot in the near future.

http://labs.trolltech.com/blogs/2008/11/05/qt-animation-framework/
http://labs.trolltech.com/page/Projects/Graphics/Kinetic

How possible? "Palin Didn't Know Africa Is A Continent"

Is this serious or an internal gunfight between republicans after the defeat?

I think McCain expected her to be a symbol like Obama is:
- she is a woman
- she is the first woman to be governor of Alaska
- she is the youngest governor of Alaska
- second female to be candidate for vice-presidency
- nice looking

Hopefully it failed.
Pro-life, for death penalty, pro guns (NRA), creationism... how can you have so many defects?

Lenovo 3000 N100

I bought 1000€ a 15,4" laptop Lenovo 3000 N100 1 year and half ago.
Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 100GB hard disk and specially a screen resolution of 1680x1050 which is just perfect for programming.

After 1 year and half, the battery gives not more than 1h of autonomy, the laptop is always very hot and crashes often (70C to 80C) and I have already replaced the power plug which is dying again.

For the power plug, it's better to buy one like this:

instead of this (the one from my Lenovo laptop):

The plug will bend over time, specially if you use your laptop in your bed instead of a table.
After some time the wires inside the black plastic will get cut.
